Toby Stephens, the acclaimed actor and son of renowned performers Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens, has opened up about his personal journey and the impact of family on his life. Currently starring in ‘Equus’ at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory, Stephens shared insights into his past, including a difficult battle with alcoholism during his twenties.
According to The Guardian, Stephens revealed that he lost his dad to cirrhosis, a tragedy that has profoundly influenced his perspective on addiction. He emphasized that the only difference between himself and his father was that, tragically, he couldn’t stop drinking, which he now views as a significant turning point in his life.
In addition to discussing his struggles, Stephens expressed his admiration for his late mother, calling her practical and influential in shaping his artistic tastes. He recalled her encouragement to actively cultivate his interests rather than passively waiting for opportunities.
The actor also touched on lighter topics, such as his guilty pleasure for cigars and humorous anecdotes from his life, including a mortifying incident involving a stomach upset while dining with his daughter. As he navigates his career and family life, Stephens aims to be remembered fondly and continues to grapple with the lessons life has taught him about expectations and reality.
