Arabic version: انخفاض أسعار الذهب مع بقاء أسعار الفائدة مرتفعة
The price of gold has seen a significant decline, dropping from a high of $5,303 per troy ounce on January 28 to $4,235 on Friday. According to Al Jazeera, this downturn is largely attributed to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel attacking Iran, which has led to soaring inflation and concerns about interest rates.
Since the war began in late February, inflation has surged, driven by disruptions in oil and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. This has resulted in energy prices increasing and, consequently, inflation reaching its highest level in three years in the U.S., at 4.2 percent. With a steady job market, expectations for immediate cuts in interest rates have diminished, putting further pressure on gold prices.
Gold is traditionally viewed as a safe haven during economic turmoil, but higher interest rates diminish its appeal as an investment. Gold does not yield income like other assets, meaning its value must increase for investors to profit. As interest rates rise, investors often turn to the dollar, which has strengthened in response to the Iran conflict, putting additional downward pressure on gold.
Industry experts note that the current environment presents a unique challenge for gold. Collin Plume, CEO of Noble Gold Investments, remarked that the interplay between interest rates and inflation is particularly complex this year. The CME FedWatch tool indicates a greater than 50 percent likelihood of an interest rate hike by December, which could further influence gold’s value.
Recent news of a potential deal between the U.S. and Iran led to a slight increase in gold prices on Friday. However, analysts caution that even if the conflict resolves, multiple factors will continue to impact gold prices moving forward. Justin Cardwell, head options analyst for OptionSpreaders.com, emphasized that while gold may find support at its current price range, various economic conditions will keep its price growth limited.
