Talks between the United States and Iran are scheduled to commence on Sunday at the Burgenstock luxury hotel complex in Switzerland, following a delay earlier this week. According to Al Jazeera, the Iranian delegation will include senior officials such as Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The planned discussions come after both nations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that calls for a permanent cessation of military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon. The MoU stipulates that a final agreement should be reached within 60 days, although this timeline can be extended with mutual consent.

In Washington, Vice President JD Vance confirmed that leading US negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are already in Switzerland, preparing for the negotiations centered on Iran’s nuclear program. Vance noted the complexities involved in coordinating the talks, indicating that he expects to travel to Switzerland “sometime in the next couple of days.”

However, the backdrop of these negotiations is fraught with tension. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has announced it is re-imposing restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz due to ongoing Israeli attacks in Lebanon. This decision follows a series of Israeli airstrikes that have resulted in significant casualties in Lebanon, raising concerns about regional stability.

As the talks approach, both Pakistani and Qatari mediators are set to join the discussions. Despite the diplomatic efforts, Iranian officials have expressed skepticism about the US’s commitment to the interim deal, emphasizing the need for the US to fulfill its obligations to make progress possible.
