Arabic version: تزدهر ناراكورت بمساهمات المهاجرين الاقتصادية والاجتماعية

According to ABC News,

Naracoorte, a small town in South Australia, is experiencing a vibrant transformation thanks to the contributions of migrants. With a population of just 6,300, the town has become a hub for newcomers, enriching its community and economy despite facing housing challenges. Locals have noted that the influx of migrants has filled essential gaps in various industries and boosted local businesses.

The Naracoorte Lions Club’s Malcom McEachern emphasized that the town would be significantly worse off in all other aspects without the presence of migrants. He noted that the participation of migrants in local churches and schools has contributed to a stronger community atmosphere. McEachern stated that the energy in Naracoorte shifts positively in the evenings due to the diverse population.

Local businesses, such as The Daily Market run by Afghan migrant Didar Ali, reflect the town’s multicultural fabric. Ali has observed a notable increase in the number of migrants and businesses since he arrived in 2011, highlighting the growing demand for diverse food options in the area.

Volunteering has also become a significant aspect of migrant life in Naracoorte. Kiribati migrant Totiria Ngatau is actively involved in environmental initiatives, helping to manage invasive species in the region. Frances Kirby from the Australian Migrant Resource Centre works to support new arrivals, ensuring they understand local life and can integrate into the community effectively.

While some local political figures have proposed reducing migration due to housing shortages, community leaders like former mayor Erica Vickery advocate for increased migration, noting the positive impact on local connections and cultural understanding. Vickery has worked to bridge gaps between locals and newcomers, fostering a more inclusive environment in Naracoorte.
