Australia’s Indian community is preparing a vibrant cultural showcase for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will visit Melbourne from July 8 to 10. The event, known as Melbourne Meets Modi, is expected to attract thousands and will feature performances that highlight the diverse culture of the Indian diaspora in Australia. According to ABC News, the two-hour show at Docklands Stadium will include music, dance, and other artistic expressions that celebrate India’s rich traditions.
The Melbourne event marks a significant occasion, as it is the first large gathering for Modi in the city, which has the largest Indian population in Australia. Preparations are in full swing, with over 200 performers expected to take part. Anjali Bhagwat, who is organizing the cultural program, noted the overwhelming interest from community members, with 17 teams and 33 performances planned to reflect India’s cultural diversity.
Viraj Salvi, a Hindustani classical vocalist participating in the event, expressed his excitement about performing for both Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He emphasized the theme of unity in diversity, which resonates throughout the performances. Meanwhile, Pranav Aggarwal from the Australia India Foundation revealed that more than 400 community organizations have shown interest in participating, with around 18,000 to 20,000 attendees anticipated at the stadium.
While the event is a celebration for many, it is not without controversy. Modi faces criticism from opponents regarding his political stance and governance in India. Some community members have raised concerns about the socio-economic issues in India and the need for stronger representation for the Indian diaspora abroad. Despite these challenges, the Melbourne Meets Modi event stands as a testament to the vibrant culture and community spirit of Indians in Australia.
