Lachie Perrem suffered burns to 75 per cent of his body after a robotic vacuum cleaner malfunctioned in his Perth home. According to ABC News, the incident took place last Thursday in the suburb of Brabham and has left his family grappling with significant hospital and rehabilitation expenses.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) indicated that the fire was due to a fault in a robotic vacuum cleaner, although the specific model has not been disclosed. Authorities confirmed a triple-zero call was made from the house at around 5 PM, leading to the dispatch of four firefighting crews to the scene.
In the aftermath, authorities have seized the vacuum and other items from the home for testing, although the Department of Local Government Industry Regulation and Safety (DLGIRS) cautioned that it is too early to draw any conclusions about the cause or source of the fire. Investigators are examining a range of factors to determine the origin and ignition source of the fire.
Lachie Perrem remains in the intensive care unit, facing a prolonged recovery that will involve multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. His mother, Fiona Perrem, expressed the family’s distress over the incident, stating that their lives have been turned upside down. His fiancée, Bri Thompson, described the situation as “completely unimaginable,” emphasizing the emotional toll on their lives.
The family has requested privacy during this challenging time, highlighting Lachie’s values of kindness and generosity. They expressed hope for his recovery while acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding his prognosis. The incident has also raised questions about the safety of robotic vacuum cleaners, with no recalls reported on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s product safety website since the accident.
