Epping Football Netball Club is preparing to hold a commemorative service for Nathan Fitzgerald, a 27-year-old footballer and teacher who tragically died following a serious injury during a local match. According to ABC News, Fitzgerald was critically injured on Saturday at Lalor Recreation Reserve when his head collided with a cricket pitch. He passed away on Monday night after receiving end-of-life care in hospital.

Fitzgerald’s brother, Matthew, visited the recreation reserve on Tuesday to collect floral tributes left by mourners. He described Nathan as a “gentle, wonderful soul” who cherished his family and always expressed his love. The football community has responded with an outpouring of support, with Epping Football Netball Club president Luke De Vincentis noting that over $100,000 had been raised via a GoFundMe page to assist the Fitzgerald family during this difficult time.

The Australian Football League (AFL) also expressed condolences, stating that all 18 clubs would wear black armbands in memory of Fitzgerald this weekend. De Vincentis confirmed that Fitzgerald’s number 34 jersey would be retired, ensuring that it remains forever associated with him.

Tonight, club members will meet to decide whether to proceed with their scheduled games this weekend. Regardless of the decision, a tribute service will take place at the Epping Recreation Reserve on Saturday, open to the general public. De Vincentis emphasized the unity of the football community, stating that in times of tragedy, everyone comes together as one big Aussie Rules family.

Mernda Central College, where Fitzgerald was a teacher, remembered him as an “exceptional young man” who brought warmth and kindness to his students. Federal Labor MP Andrew Giles remarked on the impact Fitzgerald had on his community, highlighting his promise as both an athlete and educator. Meanwhile, WorkSafe has confirmed it is investigating the incident that led to Fitzgerald’s injury, and the City of Whittlesea has stated it would support a safety review of the pitch if necessary.
