Arabic version: ترامب يعلن انتهاء الهدنة مع إيران بعد الهجمات الأخيرة
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the end of the ceasefire with Iran during a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkiye, on July 8, 2026. He characterized Iranian leaders as ‘sick people’ after both nations exchanged military attacks. Trump’s comments came in response to a question regarding the status of the ceasefire, which he dismissed as a waste of time.
According to Al Jazeera, Trump expressed his disdain for Iranian leaders, stating, “They’re scum, they’re sick people, they’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people. And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it.” He indicated that negotiations would continue, but it was up to Tehran to engage in talks.
The escalation followed Iranian attacks on U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait, which were seen as retaliation for U.S. strikes on Iranian positions in Hormozgan province and the port city of Mahshahr. The U.S. military confirmed that it had launched significant strikes against over 80 targets in response to Iranian attacks on ships in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
This recent conflict poses a threat to a ceasefire agreement reached the previous month, which aimed to facilitate negotiations to end the ongoing war. Despite the heightened tensions, neither the U.S. nor Iran has indicated a clear intention to withdraw from potential negotiations, although the situation remains precarious following the latest exchanges of military actions.
