Arabic version: رجل أسترالي يبلغ من العمر 39 عامًا يموت في مركز هجرة في بالي
A 39-year-old Australian man has died after being taken into immigration detention in Bali while awaiting deportation, officials said.
According to ABC News, officials from Bali immigration said the man was taken into custody on Friday for an alleged breach of visa conditions and was found unresponsive hours later after periodic CCTV monitoring detected he remained motionless in a restroom. “During subsequent periodic monitoring via CCTV, officers noticed an anomaly when the detainee remained motionless for an extended period inside the rest room,” a spokesperson for Bali immigration’s Ngurah Rai office said. Officers immediately attended the scene, checked vital signs, administered first aid including supplemental oxygen, and coordinated with the nearest hospital to dispatch an ambulance.
Arriving medical personnel provided initial treatment and transferred the individual to the Bali Jimbaran General Hospital for intensive care, but officials say he was declared dead on the way to hospital. A preliminary medical assessment indicated the cause of death was cardiac arrest. Indonesian police have opened an investigation and immigration officials say the Australian embassy has been contacted. The Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Bugie Kurniawan, extended his deepest condolences to the man’s family.
Immigration officials said the detention followed public complaints lodged in March relating to an alleged breach of visa conditions. “Despite numerous opportunities to resolve their immigration status cooperatively, the individual repeatedly failed to comply with official summonses issued by officers,” the spokesperson said. On Friday, 10 July 2026, an immigration enforcement team apprehended the individual at their residence in Jimbaran, South Kuta.
This story matters because the death occurred while the man was in the custody of immigration authorities and is now the subject of a police investigation and a notification to the Australian embassy, facts that bear directly on detainee welfare and official procedures.
What happens next: Indonesian police are investigating the circumstances of the death and the Australian embassy has been notified, according to immigration officials.
