A 74-year-old man is in a critical condition after being found with serious head injuries on Orchardleigh Street in Yennora early on Saturday. According to ABC News, emergency services were called about 4:40am after neighbours discovered the man injured and unconscious on the side of the road. He was taken to Westmead Hospital and remains in a critical but stable condition following surgery.

NSW Police said they had been unable to speak to the man and believe he was the victim of an assault. They described the incident as what “appeared to be a cowardly and callous attack.” Acting Fairfield City Police Area Commander Brenton Sommerville said the man “appeared to be the victim of an assault” and asked members of the community to come forward: “We’d ask for members of the community, anyone who has seen or heard anything … to contact police,” he said. A crime scene has been set up in the area.

Police described him as a married father-of-three known for going on early morning walks in the area. Neighbour John Sau said, “He’s nice and quiet and do walking every morning, that’s what I saw.” Joshua Albrown described the victim as “a peaceful man” and said he was still wondering why “the guy punched him from the back.” Police also said the man had been out for a period of about 30 minutes prior to the incident.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything to contact detectives directly or through Crime Stoppers, and are seeking dashcam vision or other information that may assist the investigation.
