According to Cnbc, Amazon is laying off some employees in its unit focused on artificial general intelligence, while continuing to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. The company confirmed the cuts Wednesday but did not disclose how many employees were affected or which parts of the organization were included.

The AGI unit develops AI models and includes teams working on silicon development and quantum computing initiatives. Amazon said the organization remains important to its work, but described the reductions as part of a sharper focus on customer priorities. “This is a fast-moving space, and we’re sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers, so we can move faster on what counts,” an Amazon spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the focus required “some difficult decisions,” including eliminating roles in parts of the AGI organization, while the company continues to invest in areas considered important to customers’ future. Employees focused on model customization and post-training were among those saying on LinkedIn that they had been let go. Reuters first reported the layoffs.

Amazon has carried out targeted reductions after broader job cuts in October and January. The company has laid off more than 30,000 staffers since October and has continued to remove roles through smaller rounds in recent months. The reductions follow years of downsizing after a pandemic hiring surge and as Amazon directs major spending toward AI infrastructure.

Amazon’s AGI group released its Nova foundation models in 2024. Last December, longtime cloud executive Peter DeSantis replaced Rohit Prasad as head of the group. In February, David Luan, who had led Amazon’s AGI lab after joining through the acquihire of Adept in 2024, left the company. Amazon is scheduled to report second-quarter results next week and has forecast $200 billion in capital expenditures for the year.
