Changes in an ageing parent’s memory, mood or behaviour can be difficult to understand. Is it simply part of getting older, or could it be something more?

The University of Sydney’s Facing Dementia Together team is offering a free online webinar to help adult children recognise possible signs of dementia and support their parents with clarity, confidence and respect.

“Is Mum ageing, or is it dementia?” is a practical, one-hour session for anyone concerned about an ageing parent’s memory, thinking, mood or ability to manage everyday activities. Back by popular demand, the webinar will be offered on three evenings in 2026.

Nearly half of Australians living with dementia do not have a diagnosis. Without one, people may miss out on treatment, while their families may struggle to find appropriate information and support. Understanding the signs and knowing how to seek help can make an important difference.

During the webinar, University of Sydney experts will explain why dementia is a medical condition rather than an inevitable part of ageing. Participants will learn how to use the Dementia Changes Checklist to identify concerns involving memory, daily activities and mood.

The session will also explore one of the most challenging steps for many families: starting a conversation. Presenters will offer practical strategies for discussing memory changes with a parent in a caring and respectful way.

Participants will then receive step-by-step guidance on working with GPs and specialists to access appropriate assessment and support. A live question-and-answer session will provide an opportunity to ask the experts about concerns affecting individual families.

Speakers include Professor Lee-Fay Low, psychologist and Professor in Ageing and Health, alongside campaign officers Aisha Kenawy and Cynthia Lam.

The Facing Dementia Together initiative is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and led by the University of Sydney. It has been co-designed with Arabic, Chinese and Vietnamese communities in South-Western Sydney. Free multilingual resources and checklists are also available in English, Arabic, Chinese and Vietnamese.
