According to ABC News, prison worker Enio Screpanti is standing trial in South Australia’s District Court over allegations of aggravated indecent assault and rape involving a female inmate at an Adelaide prison facility.

Mr Screpanti, 67, has pleaded not guilty to allegations that the incidents occurred on separate occasions in the early 2020s. Prosecutor Christine Hanna told the jury that the alleged incidents happened when he and the woman were alone together.

Ms Hanna said one allegation concerned an occasion when Mr Screpanti asked the alleged victim to accompany him to a gym and walk on a treadmill while it was in use. She said the prosecution alleged he then sexually assaulted the woman. Several months later, he allegedly asked her to go to a shed for a job, where the prosecution alleges he raped her.

The prosecutor said two prisoners would give evidence about interactions between Mr Screpanti and the alleged victim, including incidents that are not the subject of charges. Defence lawyer Gilbert Aitken urged jurors to scrutinise what witnesses actually saw and consider the prison context, including potential resentment, hostility or self-interest among prisoners or former prisoners. He said the jury would also hear about CCTV evidence that is no longer available. The trial is continuing.
