According to ABC News, Bernard Tomic has continued his career resurgence by reaching his first ATP quarterfinal in seven years after defeating fourth-seeded Karen Khachanov in Mexico. The 33-year-old Australian beat the dual grand slam semifinalist 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets on Wednesday, Thursday AEST.

Tomic, a former world number 17, entered the main draw as a qualifying lucky loser. His victory over Khachanov followed a 46-minute, 6-1, 6-0 first-round win against Alex Hernandez, the fastest win on the tour this year. Ranked 171st, Tomic could rise as high as number 132 if he wins a fifth ATP title in Los Cabos.

He will next face either British fifth seed Cam Norrie or fellow Australian James Duckworth. It will be Tomic’s first ATP quarterfinal since he lost to Alex de Minaur in Atlanta in 2019. Earlier this month, Tomic won the Lincoln Challenger after saying he had considered retirement.

In Washington DC, world number six de Minaur defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the last 16. The top seed and defending champion beat Tsitsipas for only the second time in 14 meetings and will now play 17-year-old Australian Cruz Hewitt for the first time.

Hewitt, the son of Australian Davis Cup captain and de Minaur mentor Lleyton Hewitt, earned his first ATP match win on Wednesday. He said facing de Minaur would be a “dream”, describing the player as like a big brother and saying de Minaur had taught him much.
