According to BBC News, British filmmaker Justin Hardy has died aged 61 after suffering a heart attack on Friday night.

Hardy’s family said they were “devastated” by his death, remembering him as “a man of family, of boundless creativity” who was “so full of life right to the end”. His brother Dominic said Hardy had “an incredible appetite for life” and described the loss of his “larger-than-life presence”.

A Bafta and Emmy nominated writer and director, Hardy recently made the 2024 documentary Children of the Wicker Man with Dominic. The film explored the legacy of their late father Robin Hardy’s 1973 cult horror classic The Wicker Man.

He had completed production on Wrath of the Gods, the final chapter of the Wicker Man trilogy, before his death. The film was due to premiere in London later this month and was inspired by recently discovered scripts and storyboards by Robin Hardy. Dominic called the last film “incredibly beautiful” and said making something new had brought his brother “a great satisfaction”.

Hardy also directed historical films and documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4 and CNN, including Princes In The Tower, Trafalgar Battle Surgeon, The Relief Of Belsen and Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen. He taught screenwriting at University College London and is survived by his wife Larissa and their four children.
