According to The Guardian, Carlton interim coach Josh Fraser has emerged as a leading candidate for the club’s full-time role after the Blues defeated reigning premiers Brisbane by 76 points on Saturday. Carlton won 24.10 (154) to 11.12 (78), its biggest score since August 2012.

The performance was described as one of Carlton’s best since the opening round of the 2024 season, when the Blues came back to beat Brisbane at the Gabba. Against the Lions, Carlton moved the ball with speed, purpose and precision, used handball effectively, and produced strong set-shot kicking.

Several young players featured prominently. Harry Dean and Jagga Smith were among the high selections made by former list manager Nick Austin, while Talor Byrne, Billy Wilson and Cooper Lord also contributed against Brisbane. Six Carlton players involved were aged 21 or under. Smith won the Robert Walls medal, while Dean and Smith were identified as possible Rising Star award contenders.

Brisbane entered the match on a seven-game winning streak but struggled after quarter-time. The Lions have now conceded more than 100 points eight times this year. Brodie Kemp kicked four goals in about 20 minutes, largely from contested marks. Brisbane’s defensive difficulties were compounded after Ty Gallop’s suspension forced Eric Hipwood to play in defence, while Ryan Lester was dealing with a shoulder injury. The Lions face Hawthorn at the Gabba on Friday.

Fraser, who has coached at lower levels, has overseen a marked improvement in Carlton’s results and player response. The Blues’ display against Brisbane highlighted the young talent available to whoever ultimately receives the permanent coaching appointment.
