According to ABC News, Brisbane bus driver Lindsay Francis Selby has failed in his attempt to overturn his conviction for careless driving causing the death of 18-year-old Tia Cameron.

Selby was convicted by a magistrate last year after a bus mounted a curb in Brisbane’s CBD during peak hour in March 2024, pinning Cameron against a building. She suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

The 72-year-old challenged the conviction in Brisbane District Court last month. On Tuesday, Judge Bernard Porter KC dismissed the appeal and ordered Selby to pay $1,800 in legal costs to the Queensland Police Service.

In a written decision, Judge Porter said he had considered the whole of the evidence and visited the crash site in person. He said he agreed with the magistrate’s decision, though on slightly different reasoning.

The court heard Selby had been turning left into Edward Street and travelling downhill when he swerved left again to avoid banked traffic. Judge Porter found beyond reasonable doubt that Selby was “not paying sufficient attention to what was unfolding before him”, saying he either did not notice or did not consider a car ahead that was braking and stopping.

Selby had received an eight-month sentence, wholly suspended, and a one-year driving disqualification. Judge Porter said the evidence did not sustain certainty over whether Selby tried unsuccessfully to brake before steering left.
