According to Al Jazeera, US stocks surged on Monday while oil prices fell, as Washington and Tehran gave conflicting accounts of whether talks were taking place over ending the US-Israel war on Iran.
The S&P 500 gained 1.5 percent, finishing just below its closing record of 7,620.90, set on June 2. The Nasdaq Composite rose 2.1 percent and closed 4.3 percent below its all-time peak of 27,093.90. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.3 percent to reach a record 53,178.41.
Major technology companies led the advance. Meta Platforms rose 6 percent, while Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet gained between 4.4 percent and 4.9 percent. Nvidia climbed 2.9 percent and Tesla rose 3.5 percent. Apple was the only one of the “Magnificent Seven” not to make substantial gains. Futures linked to the S&P 500 were up more than 0.2 percent in after-hours trading.
Brent crude fell about 5 percent on Monday before rising in Asian trading on Tuesday. At 04:00 GMT, Brent futures were hovering around $85 per barrel, more than 1.3 percent above Monday’s close. Asian markets declined at that time, with South Korea’s Kospi down 1 percent, Japan’s Nikkei 225 lower by 0.7 percent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index off 0.5 percent.
President Donald Trump said talks with Iran were under way and that he wanted to give Tehran “every last chance” to reach a deal before renewed strikes. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran was not engaged in talks with Washington and had no meetings with US officials planned. He said Iranian officials were negotiating with Oman on ship transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
