According to BBC News, a major search is under way for a 13-year-old boy who reportedly got into difficulty while swimming off the East Yorkshire coast at Hornsea.

Emergency services were called to Hornsea at about 18:00 BST. The search is taking place off the resort’s South Promenade, with Hornsea Inshore Rescue, HM Coastguard and Humberside Police remaining at the scene. The RNLI said its Bridlington all-weather lifeboat had joined the operation.

Chief Superintendent Phil Booker said the priority was to find the boy. He said specialist Police Search Advisors, the force’s Marine Unit and drone pilots had been deployed for an extensive search-and-rescue operation.

HM Coastguard said crews from Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea were involved, alongside a coastguard helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft. At the scene, BBC reporter Phillip Norton described a subdued atmosphere, with police and emergency services positioned along the sea wall and members of the public watching the search from the shore.

Booker urged people to avoid the area where possible so emergency services could work efficiently and safely, and asked them not to speculate about the circumstances. Anyone with information that could help the search has been asked to contact Humberside Police.
