According to Cnbc, the artificial intelligence trade has returned to firmer footing after the forced unwind of Situational Awareness, a hedge fund run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. The fund had used substantial borrowed money for bullish AI-infrastructure bets, including chipmakers, while betting against enterprise software companies viewed as facing disruption risk.
The unwind followed a turbulent July, when hardware-related names fell and software stocks rose. Semiconductor stocks and data-center suppliers surged last Thursday as the market moved higher, while the software rebound paused. CNBC said the reversal extended beyond that session as subsequent developments reinforced expectations that AI infrastructure investment remains active.
Microsoft, Corning, Eaton, Intel and Amazon were among the portfolio’s leading recent winners from the July 29 close through Thursday. Microsoft reported an impressive figure for its Azure cloud unit and surprising traction for its Copilot AI assistant. Its stock rose 15.5% last Thursday and added another 11% through Thursday’s close, while relatively strong free cash flow helped ease concerns about its AI spending.
Amazon also contributed to renewed confidence after Amazon Web Services grew 37%, above expectations. CEO Andy Jassy defended the company’s aggressive AI investments, helping investors assess the potential returns from that spending. Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Microsoft have signaled substantial capital expenditure plans, benefiting suppliers such as chipmakers, Corning, GE Vernova and Eaton. Nvidia also gained support after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the company would exclusively use Nvidia chips for its data centers. Cybersecurity providers CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks have also regained momentum as concerns grow over AI-era cyberattack risks.
