According to BBC News, British teenager Filip Nowacki won a dramatic gold medal in the men’s 200m breaststroke final at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris.
The 18-year-old produced a late burst to finish in two minutes 7.70 seconds. He edged Dutch swimmer Caspar Corbeau, who recorded 2:07.78, while Austria’s Luka Mladenovic took bronze in 2:08.91. Fellow Briton Gregory Butler finished fifth in 2:09.45.
Nowacki, the world junior champion in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, had already made history for Jersey last month by winning the 200m breaststroke gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Great Britain added two bronze medals through Lauren Cox and Freya Colbert. Cox finished third in the women’s 50m backstroke in 27.15 seconds behind Italian winner Sara Curtis, 19, who set a world record of 26.56s. France’s Mary-Ambre Moluh was second in 27.06.
Curtis had broken Australian Kaylee McKeown’s previous record by 0.23 seconds with 26.63s in Wednesday’s semi-final, before improving her time in the final a day later. Colbert earned bronze in the women’s 200m freestyle in 1:55.81, behind championship-record winner Barbora Seemanova of 1:54.38 and the Netherlands’ Marrit Steenbergen, who swam 1:54.65.
