According to BBC News, Iga Swiatek won her first WTA title of the season by beating Elena Rybakina 6-2 6-3 in the Canadian Open final in Toronto. The six-time Grand Slam winner, cheered by the crowd, secured her 26th career title in one hour and 15 minutes.

Swiatek, 25, broke the world number two’s serve twice in the opening set and saved two break points on her own serve. Rybakina made 12 unforced errors in that set. The Kazakhstan player led 2-1 in the second, but Swiatek won five of the last six games and did not face a break of serve.

Rybakina, 27, finished with one ace, four double faults, 13 winners and 23 unforced errors. “I tried my best but it wasn’t enough,” said Rybakina, whose previous three matches had gone to three sets. Swiatek said the victory meant “so, so much” after difficult recent months and will return to the top five in the rankings following her first Canadian final win.

Elsewhere, Great Britain’s Katie Boulter beat American Katie Volynets 7-5 0-6 6-4 in the first round of the Cincinnati Open, earning her first career victory at the event. In the men’s Canadian Open final, Ben Shelton defended his title with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) win over fellow American Brandon Nakashima in Montreal.
