According to Al Jazeera, Hamas political leader and chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya is travelling to Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials before a planned regional visit by Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s envoy.

In his first visit to Egypt since taking over Hamas’s leadership in late July, al-Hayya is expected to meet Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad on Sunday morning, Hamas sources told the AFP and Anadolu news agencies.

Next week, Kushner is due to travel to Israel and Egypt with Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s high representative for Gaza. The visit is intended to narrow differences over a Gaza plan rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu publicly dismissed the 15-point plan last Sunday. Under the proposal, Hamas had agreed to hand its weapons to a new Palestinian governing committee. Hamas political bureau member Basem Naim said the group was awaiting pressure from mediators and the United States on Netanyahu’s government to follow the roadmap.

Israeli attacks continued in Gaza on Saturday, when Israeli fire killed two Palestinians and wounded 14 others after air strikes, artillery shelling and demolitions, Gaza’s Ministry of Health said. Palestinian official sources say more than 1,250 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect in October last year, while the overall death toll since October 2023 exceeds 73,300.
