According to BBC News, English champions Arsenal will face Manchester City, the Premier League runners-up and FA Cup winners, in the 2026 Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Sunday. The fixture brings together two clubs expected to compete for the league, but historical results suggest the season’s opening trophy is not a reliable indicator of the title race.

Since the Premier League began in 1992-93, only eight of 34 Charity or Community Shield winners have also won the league in that season. Five of those instances came in a six-year stretch from 2005 to 2010. Manchester City were the most recent team to achieve the double in 2019, while Manchester United had done so in 2011 under Alex Ferguson.

Only one of the past 15 Community Shield winners has gone on to become Premier League champion that season. Teams that lost the match have won more league titles over the same period, with 10 in total since 1992, including Manchester City in three successive years between 2021 and 2023. In 16 of 34 seasons, or 47%, the eventual league champions had not played in the Shield.

There is some evidence that winning can still matter in the direct comparison between the two participants. Shield winners have finished above the losing side in the league in 18 of 34 seasons. On 10 occasions, the two clubs ended the campaign as the Premier League’s top two, with the Shield winner finishing first four times and the loser runner-up.

The record for the previous season’s league champions is also mixed. They have won 18 of 34 Shields, but FA Cup winners have taken eight of the past 12 editions, including Crystal Palace in 2025. Palace finished 15th in the league after beating Liverpool, though they won the Conference League. Individual scorers have similarly produced contrasting follow-up seasons, ranging from Erling Haaland’s 52 goals after his 2022 Shield appearance to Kelechi Iheanacho scoring four Premier League goals after his 2021 winner.
