According to BBC News, Bangladesh beat Australia by nine wickets in Darwin to claim their first Test victory in Australia. Mominul Haque struck the winning boundary off Beau Webster after Bangladesh were set 57 for victory, prompting celebrations among the visitors’ players and staff.

Bangladesh had controlled the opening Test for much of the match and completed the result on the fourth day. Australia, the top-ranked Test nation, were dismissed for 284 in their second innings, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking 5-66. Cameron Green made 104, but his dismissal by Hasan Mahmud left Australia’s hopes of saving the match fading.

Mahmud was named player of the match after taking 6-55 in Australia’s first innings and 3-56 in the second. Miraz also made 65 in Bangladesh’s first innings and removed Steve Smith during Australia’s second innings. Bangladesh lost opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim for a duck in the chase, but Mominul finished unbeaten on 30 and Shadman Islam made 25.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto called it Bangladesh’s biggest win in any format and praised the team’s work. Australia captain Pat Cummins said Bangladesh had outplayed his side “in all facets” and added there were “no excuses”. The result was Australia’s second Test defeat by Bangladesh, following the visitors’ win at Mirpur in 2017. The second Test of the two-match series begins on 22 August at 01:00 BST.
