According to The Guardian, Australia have dropped opener Jake Weatherald and brought Matthew Renshaw into a 13-man squad for the second and final Test against Bangladesh, which begins in Mackay on Saturday.

Weatherald scored 23 and 0 during Australia’s nine-wicket defeat in the first Test in Darwin. The 31-year-old had entered the match in his home town with questions over his place after struggling to make an impact since joining the Test set-up as a late-blooming debutant at the start of the 2025-26 Ashes series.

His six Test appearances have produced an average of 20.36, and Australia’s selectors confirmed his omission in a short statement on Tuesday. After the Darwin match, head coach Andrew McDonald said Weatherald had made changes to where he lined up and to his movement patterns, but said it was difficult to judge whether those adjustments would hold up under pressure from a small sample size.

Renshaw, 30, last played one of his 14 Tests against India in Delhi in February 2023. He arrives after a strong Sheffield Shield season for Queensland, when he made 499 runs in six matches at an average of 49.90. He has also become a regular in Australia’s white-ball teams, playing nine one-day internationals and nine T20s over the past year.

There are no other changes to the squad. Marnus Labuschagne has kept his place despite scores of 31 and 1 in Darwin and concerns over his form. McDonald told him on Monday that he needs “big runs” to retain the No 3 position, giving him another opportunity in Mackay.
