According to ABC News, Queensland will parcel the former industrial Northshore Hamilton site to five developers for a 13-tower project with nearly 2,200 homes, but no affordable housing requirement.

The 6.1-hectare site, described as the last vacant lot on the northside of the Brisbane River, is also planned to include a 50-bed hotel, supermarket and shops. First residents are expected to move in during 2031.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said the government did not discriminate between housing types and was “pulling every lever possible” to address the housing crisis. He removed the former Labor government’s affordable housing mandate from the state facilitated development program last year, saying mandates “stopped development”.

Mr Bleijie said the towers were not required to be completed before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, though finishing them before then would be welcome. He could not say what the land sold for, saying only that it was sold at “market value”.

Queensland Labor leader Steven Miles criticised the proposal, saying the government was out of touch. Data released by realestate.com.au found only 9 per cent of Queensland homes were affordable for median-income households.
