Dear residents and members of the wider community,

Australian Citizenship Day, held annually on 17 September, is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on what it means to be Australian and celebrate the values that unite us as a nation.

In Canterbury-Bankstown, citizenship holds a particularly special significance. Ours is one of Australia’s most diverse communities, where people from every corner of the globe have come together to build a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive City.

Every year, I have the privilege of welcoming hundreds of new Australians at citizenship ceremonies held right here in our City.

These ceremonies are among the most rewarding parts of being Mayor. They are moments filled with pride, excitement and hope as individuals and families take the citizenship pledge and begin a new chapter as Australians.

For many, becoming an Australian citizen represents years of hard work, perseverance and dedication. It is a commitment to our country and a recognition that Australia is not only where they want to live, but where they belong.

Australian Citizenship Day also gives us the chance to acknowledge the important contribution that generations of migrants have made to our community and our nation.

To all those who have recently become Australian citizens, I extend my warmest congratulations.
