According to BBC News, Alexis Mac Allister scored a powerful winner as Liverpool came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield. The Argentina midfielder celebrated by grabbing the club badge after his left-footed strike from outside the penalty area beat goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Marcos Llorente gave Atletico the lead before Dominik Szoboszlai equalised. Mac Allister then turned the match with a finish that left Oblak with no chance. It was Liverpool’s first win at Anfield this season and came on Andoni Iraola’s debut as a manager in the Champions League.

The goal followed Mac Allister’s comments a day earlier about his sadness that Liverpool had not offered him a new contract during the summer. He remains contracted until 2028 and said the victory was a “positive step” for the team. “It was a good comeback,” Mac Allister said on TNT Sports. “Overall, it was a good performance. Now we have to think about the next one.”

Iraola praised goals from both midfielders, saying: “It was a lovely goal from Alexis and a lovely goal from Dominik Szoboszlai. It is good the midfielders can add goals.” Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live that Mac Allister had done “exactly what” was needed, while Steven Gerrard described the midfielder’s display as “outstanding”.

Five of Mac Allister’s 20 Liverpool goals in all competitions have come from outside the penalty area. Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock said the World Cup and Premier League winner’s qualities were already clear, but that consistent performances over the season would be important if he wants a new deal.
