According to ABC News, Newcastle’s 20-10 NRL finals victory over South Sydney on Friday night showcased a group of young players who delivered under pressure at Sydney Football Stadium. The Knights entered the match without Dylan Brown, Dylan Lucas, Trey Mooney and Jacob Saifiti, but secured their first away finals win in 13 years.

Backrower Jermaine McEwan, 21, helped contain South Sydney’s left edge and scored two tries. His work came before Rabbitohs playmaker Cody Walker suffered a calf injury early in the second half, ending his match. Walker’s departure removed a key link in the Rabbitohs’ left-side attack.

McEwan combined with backrow partner Francis Manuleleua on a strong Knights defensive edge. Manuleleua produced a major first-half hit on Cameron Murray, though he was ruled offside. Veteran centre Dane Gagai also played a prominent role, scoring in the 25th minute after a contest with South Sydney’s Latrell Mitchell.

Kalyn Ponga was influential for Newcastle, while Sandon Smith and Fletcher Sharpe helped lessen the burden on the fullback. Tyson Frizell made an important contribution up front. For South Sydney, Jack Wighton was close to his side’s best, Campbell Graham made several last-gasp saves, and Keaon Koloamatangi finished his final game as a Rabbitoh.

South Sydney’s season ended in its first finals appearance in four years. The Rabbitohs were left to consider several late moments, including a Bud Sullivan try that was disallowed after a knock-on from Alex Johnston and Brandon Smith’s final attempt with three minutes remaining that fell short. Newcastle, meanwhile, advanced after a performance built on fresh faces, defensive resolve and young legs.
