According to Cnbc, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said “peace and tranquility” in border areas is essential to developing bilateral relations with China. Modi made the remarks during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.

Modi and Xi committed to resolving border issues in a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable” manner, according to an Indian government release. The leaders also agreed that India and China should take a “strategic and long-term perspective” on their relationship and not allow differences to become disputes.

Xi’s trip is his first visit to India since 2019. Relations between the neighboring countries deteriorated sharply after a deadly border skirmish in 2020, but have been thawing for more than a year. Their border disputes stretch back decades and led to war in 1962. Last month, the two sides held a 25th round of talks, reaching eight points of outcomes and consensus on the long-running disputes.

Trade imbalances and border tensions have been central areas of disagreement. China is India’s largest business partner, with total trade reaching a record $151.1 billion in the year ending March 2026. India’s trade deficit with China rose to a record $112.16 billion from $99.21 billion. The meeting readout said Modi and Xi agreed to address concerns over the structural trade imbalance, supply chains and predictable market access.

Ties have improved since Modi and Xi met in Tianjin last year. Direct flights between India and China have resumed, several old Silk Road trade routes have reopened, and India relaxed rules around investment from Beijing in March.
