According to ABC News, Alexander Zverev defeated American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(7/2), 5-7, 6-2 in the men’s US Open final in New York, securing his second grand slam title of 2026. Zverev, who won his first major crown of the year at the French Open, completed the four-set victory in three hours and 33 minutes.
The German was briefly unaware the contest was over after serving an unreturnable ball at 40-15 in the eighth game of the fourth set. He turned to prepare to return before looking at the big screen and realising he had won. “I thought it was 5-1, which helped me. I probably would’ve served like three double faults instead of one,” Zverev told ESPN.
Playing his sixth major final and second US Open final, Zverev took the opening set in 40 minutes, backed by a 94 per cent first-serve win rate. Neither player earned a break in the second set before Zverev dominated the tiebreak, moving 5-0 ahead and taking it 7-2. Shelton claimed the third set with his only service break, but Zverev broke early in the fourth and added another break to lead 5-2.
Zverev praised Shelton, 23, who was appearing in his first grand slam final and had support from his family in the stands. He said he would “bet all [his] money” that Shelton would win the trophy one day. Zverev also thanked Craig Tiley, the former Australian Open director now in charge of the United States Tennis Association, saying he expected the US Open to become “the best tournament in the world” under his leadership.
