Arabic version: تقرير عن السودان يحذر من تزايد خطر المجاعة
According to Allafrica, Sudan faces a growing risk of severe food insecurity and famine-like conditions in parts of Darfur and Kordofan, where poor rainfall, war, displacement and rising prices are reducing access to food.
A new early-warning report by conflict analyst and researcher Dr Adeeb Yousif identifies particularly sharp deterioration in El Malha in North Darfur, Jebel Marra, Buram in South Darfur and Tawila in North Darfur. Declining agricultural production, livestock losses, disrupted markets and restricted humanitarian access are leaving vulnerable communities less able to meet basic needs, the report says.
Yousif urged authorities and humanitarian organisations to respond before conditions reach formal famine thresholds. “This is not a call to wait for famine; it is a call to act now to prevent it,” he writes.
The report includes accounts of hunger and malnutrition from affected communities. A mother from El Malha said her child became progressively weaker before dying from malnutrition. In Golo, Jebel Marra, a husband described losing his pregnant wife, who suffered from malnutrition and severe anaemia and required medical care and a blood transfusion. A teacher from Tawila said her youngest child died from malnutrition and hunger during the conflict.
Poor rainfall is threatening crop production, while shortages of water and pasture are driving livestock losses, the report says. Food price increases and severe cash shortages are also weakening household purchasing power. The report calls for urgent food and water assistance, support for farmers and herders, improved nutrition services, safe humanitarian access and stronger monitoring of prices, rainfall, crops, livestock and displacement.
