According to ABC News, Australia defeated Poland 3-1 in Brisbane to secure progression in the Davis Cup, with Alex de Minaur sealing the tie through a straight-sets win over Kamil Majchrzak at Pat Rafter Arena.

The world No.9 beat Majchrzak 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday, following his 57-minute victory over Maks Kasnikowski on Saturday. De Minaur’s backhand and serve were firing as he responded to a second-round US Open exit earlier in the month.

Australia’s doubles team of Rinky Hijikata and Max Purcell had earlier put the hosts in a strong position with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win against Jan Zielinski and Karol Drzewiecki. Their 77-minute victory followed the singles win and loss recorded by de Minaur and James Duckworth respectively on Saturday.

Purcell helped turn the tight opening set in Australia’s favour in the tiebreak, producing a backhand return for the first point on Poland’s serve before hitting two aces for a 3-0 lead. Hijikata later converted the match’s only service break with a forehand return after two missed break-point chances.

The result came after Australia’s shock road loss to Ecuador earlier this year, which left the team needing to beat Poland. Australia must still win next year’s qualifying round, against an opponent yet to be decided, to reach the finals in Italy in November 2027.
