According to ABC News, Coorparoo Bowls Club has been sold to local investor Will Griffin of Griffin Hospitality Group for $6 million, preventing its demolition for high-rise apartments.

The agreement with Bowls Queensland follows a multi-year campaign by the club committee to protect the site. The committee had been due to be evicted in May this year. The club has operated for 97 years.

Under the deal, both bowling greens will be retained. One green will be used for competitions and the other for casual players. Bowls Queensland chief executive Fletcher Dyson said the organisation rejected higher offers to preserve bowls at the venue and retain its role as a community hub.

Griffin Hospitality Group plans to renovate the clubhouse, bar and kitchen while maintaining the venue’s character. Mr Griffin said the aim was to provide a place where people could play bowls, have meals, meet friends, bring family and take part in the community.

The existing Coorparoo Bowls Club committee will continue operating the club under a five-year lease. Committee chairman Mark Delbridge described the outcome as a new chapter that keeps bowls at the heart of the site.
