According to BBC News, Piers Morgan has called for pages about him to be removed from Earl Spencer’s memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, after Spencer apologised for a factual error concerning the publication of photographs of Princess Diana.

The book referred to Morgan as editor of the Daily Mirror when Mirror Group newspapers published highly intrusive photographs of Diana at a gym in 1993. The photographs were published by the Sunday Mirror on 7 November 1993. Morgan was working at The Sun at the time and did not become editor of the Mirror until 1995.

Morgan told the BBC he accepted the apology, but said his lawyers would seek removal of the offending pages. He said that if this required the first edition to be pulped, “so be it”. In a social-media post on Tuesday, Morgan said he was pursuing legal action against Spencer and publisher Penguin to have the claims removed and damages paid to the King’s Trust.

A spokesperson for Diana’s brother said Spencer’s account of a conversation with Morgan was accurate, but acknowledged that his assumption about Morgan’s role at the time was incorrect. The spokesperson said that, as a historian, accuracy was important to Spencer and that he apologised for the error. The BBC understands Penguin will amend the point in future editions.

The memoir has also prompted a dispute with Buckingham Palace over allegations concerning King Charles, then the Prince of Wales, in the days after Diana’s death. Separately, the BBC understands Prince Harry has discussed possible projects to mark the 30th anniversary of his mother’s death next year, while still considering the most meaningful way to honour her legacy.
