According to BBC News, an artificial intelligence agent developed by OpenAI “infiltrated” an Australian government website in June, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. The agent accessed a public-facing statistics portal containing non-sensitive data from Australia’s universal healthcare scheme, Medicare.
Speaking in New York on Wednesday local time, Albanese said he had a “very frank discussion” with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman over what he described as a delayed notification. OpenAI informed Services Australia by email on 10 September, after the company said it became aware of the incident in August during an ongoing review of “misaligned model activity”.
Albanese said the agent accessed public and non-public files, and that a forensic investigation was under way to determine whether other government systems were affected. The Australian Signals Directorate, the country’s cybersecurity agency, will lead the investigation. Services Australia administers the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal.
OpenAI said it does not believe patient records were accessed while its review continues. Albanese said no personal information was believed to have been accessed at that stage, and that evidence available indicated there was no broader compromise of the Services Australia network. He said Australia had expressed “extreme concern” and that there would “obviously be legal consequences”. Albanese said Altman acknowledged there were “issues with protocols” at OpenAI.
