According to ABC News, a ute towing a caravan swerved out of control while overtaking a grain road train on Collie-Dumbleyung Road in Western Australia’s Great Southern on Thursday. The caravan fishtailed before the vehicle left the road, but the drivers involved were unharmed.

Truck driver Natalie Spurr captured the incident on her dash camera while transporting grain from Lake Grace to Wagin. She said the overtaking vehicle was already moving towards her trailers as its driver lost control. After stopping, Ms Spurr told the driver: “Mate, you nearly killed both of us.” She said the ute driver was shocked and extremely apologetic.

The incident has renewed warnings for travellers as a long weekend and school holidays bring more vehicles towing caravans onto regional WA roads. Department of Transport figures show registrations of caravans and motorhomes in the state have risen for five consecutive years. As of July 2026, nearly 147,000 caravans and motorhomes were registered on WA roads.

Three people have died in regional WA road incidents involving vehicles towing caravans or camper trailers this year. Over the past decade, there have been 17 such fatalities in the state, including 16 in regional areas. Authorities advised motorists travelling long distances to slow down, take a break every two hours and share driving where possible. Vehicles towing a caravan or trailer are not permitted to exceed 100km/h, while police said there would be a noticeable presence on roads in the Great Southern over the coming weeks.
