According to The Guardian, Australia beat world champions South Africa 42-38 in a chaotic Rugby Championship Test in Perth, sending what was described as a major warning to rivals a year before the World Cup.

The Wallabies scored five tries and held on despite being reduced to 11 players during the final 15 minutes. Captain Harry Wilson celebrated the victory as Australia claimed the Mandela Challenge Plate, its second trophy in as many months.

South Africa led 10-3 early after Handré Pollard kicked a penalty and Zachary Porthen scored from a rolling maul. Australia responded through Hunter Paisami, Len Ikitau and Ben Donaldson, reaching halftime with a 24-17 advantage after Ryan Lonergan converted four times.

Wilson later scored as Australia built a 20-point lead, while Max Jorgensen ran 60 metres to add another try. The closing stages changed dramatically when Wilson, Lonergan and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii were sent to the bin, followed by Paisami for a high tackle.

With Australia down to 11 players, South Africa scored three tries and threatened a comeback. The Wallabies nevertheless forced errors, made late tackles and protected their lead to defeat a side that had recently beaten New Zealand 3-1 in a series.
