According to Cnbc, Meta’s Muse AI personal agent has begun helping consumers identify and cancel recurring subscriptions after users gave it access to banking and credit-card statements. The tool brings subscription management into a broader personal-assistant service, making it easier to spot charges consumers may have forgotten or no longer use.
The potential target is large. A Mastercard and FT Strategies report published in April found that 44% of U.S. consumers increased subscription spending in 2025, with average annual spending reaching $1,887, or about $157 a month. Bank of America payments data showed subscription spending rose 7.7% year over year in July, faster than overall card spending.
Stanford economics professor Neale Mahoney said people are about four times more likely to cancel when forced to make a decision. Research cited from his 2025 American Economic Review paper estimated that sellers can roughly double revenue through consumer inertia and cancellation friction. Mahoney said AI personal agents could weaken both forces, particularly for digital services that can continue billing without drawing attention.
Subscription-management company ScribeUp said its members are 1.8 times more likely to initiate a cancellation than a year earlier. Its median user has more than 12 recurring payments, while one in four has 20 or more. The company said the average canceled subscription costs $17.39 per month and that it saves users more than $300 a year on recurring bills they did not realize they were paying for or no longer needed.
Companies may respond by emphasizing retention rather than making cancellation harder. Recurly’s 2026 State of Subscriptions report found that use of “pause before cancel” options rose 337%, and three out of four customers who paused eventually returned. Privacy concerns remain when AI receives financial information, but Recurly data showed 43% of consumers are comfortable with AI managing subscriptions.
