According to The Guardian, Australia held off world champions South Africa 42-38 in Perth in a dramatic Test marked by a late defensive stand with only 11 Wallabies on the field.

Australia had led 42-17 midway through the second half, but four rapid yellow cards left the home side with 11 players and South Africa reduced the gap to 42-31. With four minutes remaining, the Springboks attacked from a lineout 35 metres out as Australia tried to protect a two-try lead.

Tom Wright covered from one side of the field to the other during the defensive sequence, while Tom Hooper repeatedly slowed South African attacks. Hooper then dislodged the ball from Morne van den Berg, with Wright’s toe sending it out towards the 45-metre line.

South Africa regained possession after a Wallabies lineout error and Ox Nché scored following a turnover involving Malcolm Marx and Van den Berg. Australia had regained Harry Wilson and Ryan Lonergan from the sin bin by then, taking their numbers from 11 to 13.

The Wallabies ultimately secured the result when South Africa conceded an obstruction penalty. The victory extended Australia’s unbeaten start under new coach Les Kiss to four matches and came just over a year before the men’s Rugby World Cup begins on the same arena.
