According to ABC News, former Sydney premiership coach John Longmire has joined Essendon as general manager of performance, ending 25 years with the Swans in various roles.

Longmire, 55, will begin this week ahead of the trade period and reunite with new Bombers coach Mark McVeigh, who previously worked under him. He said he was excited to join Essendon and support McVeigh and the club’s staff.

Essendon has effectively divided its football boss position into two roles. Longmire will oversee game strategy, player development, leadership, the coaching group, performance analytics, and strength and conditioning.

The Bombers finished last on the ladder and sought added support for first-year coach McVeigh. Chief executive Tim Roberts said Longmire’s experience and leadership represented a significant investment in building a program capable of sustained success.

Longmire coached Sydney in a record 333 games across 14 seasons, winning the 2012 AFL premiership and leading the club to five grand finals and 12 finals campaigns. He stepped down following the Swans’ 2024 grand final loss to Brisbane and had most recently served as Sydney’s executive director of club performance.
