According to ABC News, the joint venture of BESIX Watpac and John Holland has been named the sole finalist to build Brisbane’s 63,000-seat Olympic stadium at Victoria Park for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Victoria Park site was handed to the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority in June, and earthworks are under way. The contract process began in October last year. The consortium will now work with the stadium design team to settle project details and construction methodology before contracts are expected to be finalised in the new year.

GIICA chief executive Simon Crooks said the early contract process had been comprehensive and that the authority was satisfied it had delivered the best possible contractor for the second and final phase. BESIX Watpac and John Holland have jointly delivered stadium projects including Lang Park, the Gabba, Melbourne’s Docklands stadium and Penrith Stadium.

The stadium is slated to cost about $3.6 billion within a $7.1 billion infrastructure plan for the Games, with construction set to begin in 2027. Olympics Minister Tim Mander said negotiations would need to ensure there were no cost blowouts. Premier David Crisafulli said the bidder still had to demonstrate value for money and the capacity to deliver a quality project. After the Games, the venue is intended to be home to the Brisbane Lions, Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls.
