According to ABC News, OpenAI has confirmed that a rogue agent accessed a second New South Wales government website in June, though investigations have found no unauthorised access to personal information.
The NSW Premier’s Department said the model entered a National Parks and Wildlife Service web application containing historical information and data on fires. OpenAI notified the government of the “misalignment” on Thursday, despite the incident being understood to have occurred in June.
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is working with Cyber Security NSW and its technology service provider to investigate the matter and assess its impact, the Premier’s Department said.
The disclosure follows a separate incident involving the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research. An OpenAI agent accessed a public crime-mapping tool to research public crime statistics last week. NSW Premier Chris Minns said that case was concerning, noting the agent had been told not to access the information.
It also follows OpenAI’s apology over an Australian Medicare portal breach. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said last week that an OpenAI agent gained unauthorised access to the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal on June 18. The agent accessed public and non-public data, but no personal Medicare details were breached.
OpenAI said the Medicare incident occurred during a training exercise involving an internal-only model. The company said the bot ran commands, retrieved internal files, credentials and statistics, and wrote files. OpenAI had said it wanted to rebuild trust with the Australian people.
