Arabic version: امرأة تصف تدخلها في شجار على شاطئ غلينيلغ
According to ABC News, a woman who stepped in to stop a fight at Glenelg Beach in Adelaide said onlookers threw bottles at her, leaving her with bruises.
The woman, identified as Kate after her name was changed for safety, said she was at the beach with her daughter and a friend when she saw dozens of people running towards a gathering on Tuesday. She said the crowd was far larger than 50 people, estimating about 200 teenagers were present, with some calling out that they wanted to see blood.
Kate intervened as two males wrestled. She said the pair later told her they had been “mucking around”, but the crowd encouraged the violence and booed as she tried to intervene. She said bottles were thrown in her direction and that she picked one up and said, “Enough”.
SA Police said it was investigating the level of organisation behind fights at Glenelg and Henley Beach and seeking to identify those responsible. No charges had been laid as of Friday morning. Police said large crowds had gathered at both locations, though most people had dispersed before officers arrived.
A police operation targeting street crime and public disorder along Adelaide’s western beaches has been brought forward. Premier Peter Malinauskas described the fights as completely unacceptable, while Police Minister Michael Brown said police would maintain a strong presence over summer. Kate said she would avoid busy beaches during hotter months and urged those involved to consider the risk of serious injury.
