Taiwanese-Australian comedian J’Ma is taking her comedy from Australia to Malaysia this October, bringing two very different shows to Penang across four performances — from a deeply personal journey through life’s darker moments to a chaotic live matchmaking experiment.

J’Ma will present two performances of her solo show Shadows & Sparkles, as well as two performances of Fresh Market, an interactive live matchmaking comedy show hosted alongside Penang comedian Garu, founder of Penang Comedy.

Together, the shows offer audiences two very different sides of J’Ma: the storyteller willing to turn some of life’s most difficult experiences into comedy, and the unpredictable host ready to put modern dating — and some very brave singles — under the spotlight.

Shadows & Sparkles: Finding the Funny in the Darkness

Born in Taiwan, J’Ma was sent to Australia alone at just 13 years old.

It was an experience that forced her to grow up quickly, navigating a new country, loneliness and the challenge of finding her place far from home.

Those experiences form part of the foundation of Shadows & Sparkles, which J’Ma describes as her most personal show yet.

The show explores moving countries alone, relationships that did not last, losing people she never imagined losing, and somehow finding humour amid it all.

At its heart is a simple idea: before there are sparkles, there must be shadows.

Rather than avoiding painful experiences, J’Ma brings them onto the stage and turns them into stories audiences can laugh at, relate to and perhaps recognise pieces of their own lives within.

Raw, honest, occasionally unhinged and, as the title promises, surprisingly sparkly, Shadows & Sparkles follows J’Ma’s journey from Taiwan to Australia and now to the Penang stage.

Two performances will give local audiences the opportunity to experience a much more personal side of the Taiwanese-Australian comedian.

Fresh Market: Putting Singles on the Market — Literally

J’Ma’s second Penang production takes an entirely different approach.

Fresh Market combines stand-up comedy, live matchmaking and questionable dating advice into an interactive show hosted by J’Ma and Garu.

The concept is wonderfully simple — and potentially dangerous for anyone brave enough to volunteer.

Real singles are pitched live on stage, complete with slideshows presenting their “stats”, green flags, red flags and the reasons somebody in the audience might actually want to date them.

Think dating app profile meets PowerPoint presentation, except the potential matches are sitting in the same room.

Between the matchmaking, J’Ma and Garu will deliver stand-up exploring the realities of dating in 2026 — from breakups and ghosting to situationships and the many confusing stages somewhere between “just talking” and an actual relationship.

There will also be dating advice.

Whether anyone should actually follow that advice is another matter.

Promising “fresh local and imported singles, fresh jokes and fresh trauma”, Fresh Market is designed for everyone — whether single, taken or permanently stuck on “it’s complicated”.

Teaming Up With Penang Comedy Founder Garu

Joining J’Ma for Fresh Market is local comedian Garu, who recently marked his tenth year performing stand-up after beginning his comedy career in 2016.

Garu has appeared at major cultural and comedy events including the George Town Festival, Butterworth Fringe Festival and George Town Literary Festival.

His achievements include winning the Festival Director’s Prize at Short+Sweet Comedy 2022, followed by Best Overall Production and the Creative Excellence Award at Short+Sweet Comedy 2023.

He has also opened for prominent Malaysian and Singaporean comedians including Kavin Jay, Gajen Nad, Rizal van Geyzel, Joanne Kam, Sam See, Jinx Yeo and Umar Rana.

As one of the founders and leaders of Penang Comedy, the first and largest comedy performance group in Penang, Garu brings a distinctly local voice to J’Ma’s Penang appearances.

The partnership creates a meeting point between J’Ma’s Taiwanese-Australian perspective and Penang’s growing comedy scene.

Four Shows, Two Very Different Experiences

Across October, audiences will have four opportunities to catch J’Ma in Penang: two performances of Shadows & Sparkles and two performances of Fresh Market.

While one show looks inward and finds comedy in migration, loss, love and resilience, the other turns its attention outward — towards the wonderfully messy world of modern dating.

Together, they showcase the range of J’Ma’s comedy and storytelling.

From Taiwan to Australia and now Penang, J’Ma is bringing the shadows, the sparkles — and perhaps even a few unexpected matches along the way.
