According to BBC News, Southampton manager Tonda Eckert can continue in his role after an FA independent regulatory commission imposed a six-week ban from all football activity, suspended until the end of next season. The German has also received a £28,000 fine and a reprimand for his part in the Spygate scandal.

The FA had proposed a three-month ban after charging Eckert with misconduct in July. However, the commission said there was “considerable mitigation in this matter, most particularly around the genuine contrition”. Eckert was sanctioned for three breaches of FA Rule E3.1, and the six-week suspension would take effect if he is involved in further spying before the end of next season.

Southampton were expelled from the Championship play-offs in May after admitting to spying on training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough before the play-off semi-final. The club also received a four-point deduction for this season. An EFL independent disciplinary commission said the espionage had been authorised by Eckert and described it as a “contrived and determined plan from the top down”.

Eckert apologised in June, saying he was unaware the practice was banned and that it had not affected his team’s performances. He told BBC Sport last month: “It’s been a big, big punishment. Absolutely unheard of in the history of sports. I’ve asked for forgiveness for what I’ve done. I’ve apologised publicly.” Southampton, 13th in the Championship with four wins from eight matches, face local rivals Portsmouth this weekend.
