According to ABC News, the Royal Australian Mint has unveiled its Bright Ideas collection, a series of coins celebrating five Australian inventions: the stump jump plough, jaffle maker, black box flight recorder, baby safety capsule and high-speed Wireless LAN technology.

The collection includes five $1 coins, each carrying one invention, and a $2 proof coin featuring all five designs. A special $2 Bright Ideas coin will also enter circulation from Thursday, October 8.

Mint chief executive Emily Martin said the collection offered Australians “a chance to stop, look again and celebrate the people who thought differently”. She said the inventions had become part of Australian life rather than remaining museum pieces.

The inventions span more than a century. South Australian farmer Richard Smith designed the stump jump plough in 1876, while Dr Ernest Smithers invented the jaffle maker in 1949. Defence scientist Dr David Warren later developed the black box flight recorder.

The Safe-n-Sound baby safety capsule was founded in 1984 by Adelaide trio Bill Bowtell, Bob Heath and Colin Nagel. In the 1990s, CSIRO scientists helped develop WLAN technology, a precursor to Wi-fi. The coins will be available from the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and participating newsXpress stores around the country.
