According to Cnbc, Apollo Capital Management and several banks are discussing financing to support SpaceX’s purchase of $40 billion in Nvidia graphics processing units. A person familiar with the talks said the discussions are preliminary, with details including the key lenders yet to be finalized. The Financial Times first reported the financing discussions.
The proposed transaction would primarily rely on the investment-grade debt market, according to the person. SpaceX tapped that market four months earlier, raising $25 billion in bonds at different durations two weeks after its record-breaking IPO in mid-June. CNBC was told at the time that the bond sale drew very high demand from fixed-income investors.
SpaceX’s potential $40 billion debt deal is likely to use the GPUs as collateral, and Apollo is said to be playing a leading role in facilitating the financing. Apollo declined to comment, while Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Since SpaceX’s earlier bond sale, AI-related bonds have sold off and credit spreads have widened.
A person in the credit industry said the market continues to expect GPUs to retain their value for roughly seven years. Scarce computing power and a shortage that is not expected to ease soon support the value of high-performing GPUs, the person said. The potential financing would follow bond issuances by Meta, Amazon and Google as AI buildout costs rise. Sources told CNBC that additional debt sales are expected, while fixed-income investors are demanding higher yields and becoming more selective about AI exposure.
