Arabic version: جلسة «كاس» لحسم نزاع لقب أمم أفريقيا 2025
According to BBC News, the Court of Arbitration for Sport will hear Senegal’s appeal on Thursday against a ruling that stripped the team of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory.
Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 after extra time in January’s final in Rabat, following a chaotic stoppage-time sequence. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw led some players and staff off the field after Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR review. Play later resumed, Morocco missed the penalty, and Pape Gueye scored the extra-time winner.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation complained to the Confederation of African Football, citing regulations which state that a team leaving the field before the regular end of a match without the referee’s authorisation can be considered the loser. In March, Caf’s appeals board ruled Senegal had forfeited the final.
Senegal’s federation called that outcome “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable” and took the case to Cas. The private hearing will be considered by a three-person panel led by French sports-law expert Gerald Simon. Cas said a final decision would not be issued on the day of the hearing.
Under the Cas code, appeal decisions should be delivered within a maximum of four months, although panels are encouraged to issue rulings in under three months. Caf president Patrice Motsepe has said the governing body will respect the court’s decision.
